What is Paper Weight?
Paper weight is measured in GSM (grams per square meter)—the weight of one square meter of paper. Higher GSM means thicker, more substantial paper. But there's more to consider than just weight.
Understanding GSM Ranges
| 60-80 GSM | Lightweight—printer paper, memo pads |
| 90-120 GSM | Standard—letterheads, flyers, newsletters |
| 130-170 GSM | Medium—brochures, flyers, promotions |
| 200-300 GSM | Heavy—booklet covers, packaging |
| 350+ GSM | Extra Heavy—luxury cards, rigid packaging |
Choosing the Right Weight
Business Cards
350-400 GSM is ideal. Thicker paper feels premium and survives in wallets/pockets. Consider soft-touch lamination for extra durability.
Brochures & Flyers
130-170 GSM works well for handouts. Use 200-250 GSM for premium handouts that need to stand out.
Packaging
300-400 GSM for boxes. Add corrugated layers for shipping boxes. Consider moisture resistance for food packaging.
Booklets & Manuals
Cover: 250-300 GSM. Interior pages: 100-120 GSM. Heavier interior pages feel more premium.
It's Not Just About Weight
Two papers with the same weight can feel completely different:
- Bulk: How thick the paper feels relative to its weight
- Texture: Smooth, linen, felt, or laid
- Opacity: How much show-through (important for double-sided)
- Finish: Matte, gloss, satin, or uncoated
